While commonly used to determine thickness by making contact with only one side of the material being tested, these gauges also have the ability to detect very fine pits, flaws and porosity without having to destroy the materials or parts being tested.
The gauges acheive this by converting the transit time of a sound wave sent into and reflecting back from a defect or opposite surface in the test material, into a length measurement. This technique uses principles similar to those of sonar, and can also be used to view the underside of a piece of material or determine the thickness of paints or coatings.
